Research Summary:
Major transitions in evolution are boundaries where sets of individuals at one level cross over to acting collectively as new kinds of individuals at another level. Smith’s work concerns the statistics of coordinated behaviors of sets, both in the dynamics that generate population states and in the statistical inference by which we reconstruct them.
