Research Summary:

Many of the primordial genes in the Last Universal Common Ancestor (LUCA) served as the starting points for evolution of large superfamilies of enzymes, transporters, transcriptional regulators, and sensing proteins. We are studying the dynamics of the process by which new enzymes arise by gene duplication/amplification and divergence.
